Flow Meter

A flow meter is used to determine the speed of the water flowing through a river.

The simplest way to determine the flow rate is to measure an object floating over a known distance. This will allow you to calculate the speed by dividing the distance by the time.

The disadvantage of using this method is that the object may get stuck if there are protruding rocks or logs or if there are eddies caused by riffles and pools, so occasionally moving it with a stick or pole may be required.

One way to reduce it getting stuck is to use a short length of nylon string, or a thin length of 2mm foam. Please remember to pick it up afterwards as we don't want to litter the river!
