Wear Rivers Trust

About Us

At Wear Rivers Trust, we bring people, knowledge, and practical action together to conserve and enhance the River Wear and its catchment. Through collaboration, innovation, and a focus on lasting impact, we support healthy rivers, resilient wildlife, and vibrant communities.

Our Approach

We work collaboratively with communities, landowners, and partners to conserve and enhance the River Wear catchment. Our approach is rooted in practical solutions, local knowledge, and long-term thinking, ensuring that every action we take benefits both people and wildlife.

Partnership-led

We bring together local communities, businesses and organisations to achieve shared environmental goals.

Evidence-based

We use ecological and scientific data to guide our work and identify the most effective ways to support the river.

Practical solutions

We focus on achievable, cost-effective actions that deliver real benefits on the ground.

Lasting impact

We aim to create enduring benefits for the river, its wildlife, and the communities it serves.

Our Course Through Time

Founded in 2008 with a clear mission to protect and enhance the River Wear catchment, we have stayed true to our original intentions while continually growing and evolving. Today, with a refreshed brand and a strong vision, we are building on that foundation to create an even greater impact for the river, wildlife and communities we serve.

Our Vision & Objectives

Our vision is to protect, improve and help manage the land and water ways of the Wear Catchment, to benefit all who live, work, and play in the region. We focus on improving the environment of our urban and rural communities, using nature-based solutions to problems such as pollution, flooding and habitat loss.

Healthy rivers and landscapes closer to their natural state with an abundance of native wildlife.

Rivers that are understood, valued, and actively protected by communities for their services to society.

Reducing the impact of agriculture on the rivers and landscapes within the Wear Catchment.

A catchment that reduces our contribution to climate change and is resilient to its inevitable impacts.

Promoting awareness and engagement in protecting and improving the natural and built environment.
