Wear Rivers Trust

Biodiversity & Conservation

Healthy rivers rely on diverse, well-connected habitats. Our biodiversity and conservation work focuses on restoring these environments, supporting wildlife, and strengthening the natural processes that help rivers thrive.

Wear Conserving

At Wear Rivers Trust, we’re dedicated to protecting biodiversity and conserving the unique habitats found along our rivers. Our local environment matters because healthy rivers support thriving wildlife, resilient landscapes, and stronger communities.

Yet these precious places face growing pressures from pollution, habitat loss, and invasive species. That’s why we work with partners and people in our local communities to plant trees, monitor Riverfly populations, restore riverbanks, and tackle invasive species.

Together, this work helps to protect and increase biodiversity and to build a healthier, more resilient catchment for everyone, now and in the future.

Invasive Non-Native Species

We're tackling invasive species that threaten native wildlife and habitats. Through targeted control and partnership working, we reduce their impact and help ecosystems recover.

Wildlife and Monitoring

We're monitoring species and habitats to understand change and guide action. Our surveys and long-term monitoring help ensure conservation efforts are effective and evidence-led.

Tree Planting

We're planting the right trees in the right places to improve river habitats, stabilise banks and support biodiversity. Our work helps create connected woodland corridors that benefit water quality, wildlife and climate resilience.

Green Engineering

We're using nature-based solutions to restore rivers and manage water sustainably. We design and deliver green engineering projects that work with natural processes to improve habitats, reduce erosion and strengthen river resilience.

Benefits of our work

Investing in nature brings lasting benefits. Our conservation work helps ecosystems recover, strengthens natural resilience and supports healthier rivers that provide value for wildlife, communities and future generations.

Healthier Rivers

Improved habitat quality and natural processes support cleaner water and more resilient river systems.

Increased Biodiversity

Restored and connected habitats help native plants and animals recover and thrive.

Stronger Resilience

Nature-based solutions help reduce erosion, manage water more naturally and build resilience to climate change.

Protected Native Species

Managing invasive non-native species and monitoring wildlife helps safeguard our ecosystems.

People & Communities

Healthier rivers create positive places for people to enjoy, learn about and connect with nature.
