Funding in Action
We are grateful that most of our work is generously funded by external charitable organisations. This allows us to provide meaningful and memorable experiences to children, who may not be able to access them otherwise. While funding streams may be subject to change in the future, you can find out more about our current funded projects below.
The Sir Tom Cowie Charitable Trust funds our work with 14 primary schools across Sunderland, enabling children to take part in two field trips exploring the River Wear from its upper catchment to the river mouth. Schools draw on our scheme of work to enhance learning both before and after the visits, reinforcing geography and science curriculum content, developing fieldwork skills, and supporting a deeper understanding of how rivers change along their course, while also providing valuable opportunities to explore new environments beyond the classroom.

Supported by multiple funding streams, Wear Warriors enables children to complete a four-day award that combines local exploration with two field trips designed to broaden their understanding of the places around them. Through hands-on activities and structured outdoor learning, pupils develop key skills, build confidence in new environments, and gain a deeper appreciation of their local landscape. As they progress, children earn badges such as those for learning mapwork skills, recognising their achievements and encouraging curiosity, connection, and meaningful learning beyond the classroom.

Stanley SuDS+ encourages children from Stanley to take part in sessions that align with the National Curriculum and emphasise practical, hands-on learning. Through a focus on local environmental issues, particularly rivers and water management, children gain meaningful insight into how sustainable practices can shape and protect their community.

Wear Masters, currently funded through our Gaunless Bluespaces project is designed to inspire young people across the Bishop Auckland area to engage with the history, geography, and natural processes of their local river. Through practical activities such as water testing and environmental monitoring, students gain valuable scientific experience and a deeper understanding of their local environment. The project is tailored for secondary school learners and aligns with key curriculum objectives.
